This hand was played in a club competition where the cards were dealt at the table (Freaks do occur with normal dealing). As can be seen from the traveller the results were varied.

5 ♣ can never be beaten, 4♠ can be beaten, providing trumps are not lead by the defence. A contract is not a success for N/S, but 5's is only 2 off for a saving against 5♣'s. Therefore the optimum contract for is 5's dbl'd -2.

The question is how to get to 5?

If N/S play a weak unusual no-trump North could call 2NT over 1♣ or even over a strong 2♣ opening over this East should stay quiet, South can then either cuebid (saying pick your suit - not a success as 's are likely to be chosen) or jump in 's. West will then bid ♠ (showing at least 5). North may then call 5 and all E/W can do is double this for 300, however it North passes 4♠ then East is most likely to pass collecting a minus scoreif N/S find the correct defence.
